PRISON IS NOT GRAVEYARD

Let us improve prison conditions

For prison is not grave yard

I asked my mother some days ago

When they were sending my father to prison

And I remember she replied that

It is a place where people are kept for some time

So they stay away from a crime committed

A person found guilty of a felony or a misdemeanour may be required to serve a prison sentencePrison as we all know is an institution for the confinement of persons who have been remanded (held) in custody by a judicial authority or who have been deprived of their liberty following conviction for a crime.

My class teacher also taught me that

Grave yard is where things that are not useful are kept.

People in prison are poorly treated

And I got to know this the day I visited my father in prison

What I saw was nothing good to write home about

And cannot even be described by words from my mouth

It looks like people over there are no longer useful

And so have been dumped in prison ‘graveyard’

Which you and I know is not so

Let us improve prison conditions

For prison is not grave yard

People in prison are poorly treated

We care less about the existence of people in prison

We care less about what they wish to eat

And what they wish not to taste not forgetting vegetarians

Meanwhile they are human like us

Let us improve prison conditions

For prison is not grave yard

People in prison are poorly treated

There is overcrowding which affect the quality of life of prisoners

And this account for the inhuman condition in our prisons

This also leads to the spread of communicable diseases

Some prisoners too are made to do all kinds of difficult works

Like weeding, farming and the likes without even getting wages

Forgetting that they are still human

Let us improve prison conditions

For prison is not grave yard

People in prison are poorly treated like the pauper

What crime and what treason did they commit?

That some of them their ribs can reflect the light

Some of them are also dying like rejected fowls

Because we don’t check up on their health status

Forgetting that they are still human and must be treated as such

Let us improve prison conditions

For prison is not grave yard

People in prison are less treated as humans sometimes

And I keep on asking myself why

Why are they not given good food to eat?

Why are they not given better cloths to wear?

Why are they not given better drugs to cure their diseases?

Why are they not given better place to lay their heads?

Let us improve prison conditions

For prison is not grave yard

People in prison are like you and I and so must be treated well

Let’s take up the mantle and do our best to improve prison conditions

Yes, let’s not forget that the people in prison

Are not rejected human beings dumped in the grave yard.

People in prison are not refuse, nor dead bodies

To be dumped at the grave yard

Together we change the status co

Let us improve prison conditions

For prison is not grave yard

People in prison are human and so deserve to be treated well

For no one is destined to be in prison

But as a result of some circumstances

Some people end up there, and that doesn’t mean they are inhuman

Let us therefore improve prison conditions

For prison is not grave yard
