Disability can be
defined as a physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movements, senses,
or activities according to the dictionary.
A disability really is
any condition of the body or mind (impairment) that definitely makes it sort of
more difficult for the person with the condition to specifically do really
certain activities (activity limitation) and actually interact with the world
around them (participation restrictions) in a pretty big way.
There are for all
intents and purposes many types of disabilities, basically such as those that
essentially affect a for all intents and purposes persons, Vision Movement
Thinking, Remembering Learning, Communicating, Hearing, Mental health and
Social relationships.
As a result of readings
and observations done, I really am beginning to have more respect and kind of
appreciate the capabilities of persons living with a disability. During my
observation, there particularly was some issues I could do something about it by
educating people or creating awareness and some were beyond my control.
Below for the most part
are some observations I made and how they affected me, which is quite
significant.
On the 14th of July
this year, I meet one person living with a disability that was sitting in a
wheel chair at the legon first bus stop in front of the Ghana commercial bank,
legon branch. Majority of the trotro drivers that specifically got there did not
pick him, even though they were going that same direction that the man was
heading to.
I felt sorry for the
man living with a disability so much in a sort of big way. What I did was that,
I stopped one of the vehicles and actually pleaded that they pick the man
living with a disability that was sitting in a wheel chair for I am ready and
prepared to definitely pay for double of the price, if they even specifically
want to charge that because of the man’s basically wheel chair.
Then again on the 29th of July 2021 in Madina, it was raining heavily and there was this person in a
wheel chair again that particularly wanted to cross the road to his apartment
at the for all intents and purposes other side of the road. Crossing the road
was a problem for him and none of the people around that place too as i
specifically was watching them from afar were willing to devote their time to
help him because they were of the view that, he will waste their time, which is
quite significant. Before I reached him, he basically got someone to support
him but unfortunately was beaten by the rain.
I still think the public must be educated more about the right of these
people living with disability in our societies. In as much as we all know that
something bad can happen to the person living with disability as he is begging
for money at the road side, it is not right to talk against them.
The incident
that I will talk about here too happened in circle, not far from Odawna. On the 10th day of August 2021, I met this
man
too living with disability that was also that came to sit in the vehicle that
we were in and I notice this lady that he went to sit beside in the car was
behaving as if, the living with disability that have come to sit in the vehicle
with us is not a human like us.
Fortunately enough this
lady alighted at the very same place that I alighted, so I approached this lady
who I later found out that, she was a second year student here and advise her
not to do such a thing again.
My advice to other disabled people would be, concentrate on things your
disability doesn't prevent you doing well, and don't regret the things it
interferes with.
What I will do from time to time to support people living with
disability is that, I will be educating the general public from time to time on
the reasons why they must accept living with disability as one of them.
there is a need for us to take action as a country about this issue. I therefore uses this opportunity to plead the government, stakeholders ad the ministry whose duty is to promote the welfare and wellbeing of the persons living with disability to consider the creation of a special transport system and buses to ease the stress the persons living with disability go through here in Ghana.
I am ever ready to support in carrying out this project, if I'm being contacted.
I will conclude with Matt Patterson’s statement which say “Some would look at Emily’s life and think that a child born with disability and has little hope for a meaningful life. Throw in the diagnosis of leukemia and that little hope turns into no hope whatsoever.
