Samuel K.Owusu (S.K.O OFFICIAL) Writes ✍...
The seductive nature of being politically corrupt has found people tip toeing ethical conduct and firm principles, in the administration of public offices and position of trust. University of Ghana Student's Representative Council (UGSRC) as part of the tall list, has experienced embezzlement of funds over the period, and this continues to be a canker in the final analysis of student leadership. I’m not particularly a fan of playing the numbers game, but to turn a blind eye on the qualitative nature of corrupt activities, is to allow corrupt serpents to deny Prince Asumadu, the legitimate right to assume authority.
I and many other students have revered Prince Asumadu for his ethical principles, best practices and firmness he brings to the table, even tracing various encounters down to level 100. The quality that stands out is his fact-finding ability, the commitment and passion to dig down and unearth what lies behind the surface of suspicious and cruel situations. It will be in the best interest of collective effort and progress, to have opponents and competitors embrace such rare and excellent qualities, instead of envying and suppressing the goodwill of the people.
Prince Asumadu has been firm in his dealings with every single opportunity I had working with him. Prince and I have graced the opportunity to read Sociology together and he influenced my work as a Course Rep so significantly. He has proven to me, and other students over the years, to be a firm mind in all of his actions and decisions. If his firmness is one of the reasons the transitional process is being frustrated, then the perpetrators have a bigger quality to reckon with.
The statement issued by the Registrar and Secretary to the Academic Board, Emelia Agyei-Mensah (Mrs) on the transitional process received the applause of the University Community as stated in Point 2, line 3 of the statement. The General Secretary-Elect and the Treasurer Elect must tentatively assume the office of the President and Vice President respectively. To receive ill comments to prevent Mr. Asumadu from being sworn in, is what we refer to in the Akan Palance as, “s3 wo amma wo yonko antwa ank) a, wo nso wo ntwa nnuru"; translated if you don’t allow your friend to cross, you too cannot cross. What the supporters of the loosing candidate Samuel Amos Ofosu is trying to say is that it will be better for Naadu to be sworn in than Asumadu. This is a backward and retrogressive thinking and approach, and must not be entertained in the serious business of student governance.
Prince is truthful and accountable with anything entrusted in his hand. When he was the General Secretary for the Sociology Students Association (SOSA) in the 2020/2021 Academic Year, the office under his leadership ensured the accountability of every single monetary activity. His value for accountability has proven to be up to standards and beyond, and to suppress the best practice of accountability by frustrating swearing-in processes, will not yield the expectations of students and the undeniable will of God.
It will be morally incomprehensible to undermine his character as a very humble person. To scripturally put it, "Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble" (Prov 3:34); This shows how God places humble people on higher grounds. Mr Asumadu is not an exception in the chain of godly and divine positioning, and this was made evident during the election campaign, having students testify his humility and as a result, he was being voted for. Though students voted for Prince because of his policies, he was also voted into power because of his humility.
Pending the first hearing of Prince’s case in the Accra High Court on January 10, 2022, Stephanie Naadu Antwi has been sworn in as the UGSRC President and Daniel Obeng Asamoah being sworn in as the Treasurer
To think of preventing the swearing-in of Mr Prince Asumadu into office is not a big worry. The bigger worry is when justice is not served. Doing the right thing is what we seek.
